The goals of the Native
Hawaiian Literacy
program are to:
1. Support and encourage parent/child literacy to foster
reading, develop and
strengthen literacy skills, and build a foundation for educational
achievement
and lifelong learning.
2. Strengthen the literacy skills of Native Hawaiian adults so that they can
obtain employment and become productive citizens. |
 |
The ´IKE/Literacy Lab program works with
individuals to increase literacy levels through the P.A.C.E. curriculum,
a
self-paced and self-instructional
system for basic skills learning, and through assistance with G.E.D. preparation.
The program collaborates with other literacy service agencies to share information
and resources.
Kahi ´Ohana outreach centers are located in communities with high-density
populations of Native Hawaiians. These centers provide books, homework assistance,
literacy and reading tutorials, and storytelling for elementary school children
and their
parents.
The Ka Lama Ulu community literacy program partners with community
service
providers to develop and conduct programs and events that foster reading and “literacy
transforms lives....”
engage families in educational activities.

KAHI ´OHANA PROGRAM “… a
foundation for educational achievement and lifelong learning.”
Kahi ´Ohana outreach centers provide services that assist Native
Hawaiian children to develop reading skills and good homework
habits through reading tutorials, storytelling, library book circulation, and
homework monitoring. The program also conducts workshops and family
reading nights to involve parents in their children’s reading activities.

thereby creating a community of leaders and lifelong learners.
How to Become a Part of the Kahi ´Ohana Program
