Welcome to the Native Hawaiian Library

ALU LIKE’s Native Hawaiian Library (NHL) was established in 1985. Its purpose is to provide library and information services to Native Hawaiians and others interested in the history, culture, and contributions of Native Hawaiians. In addition to library and literacy services, the library leads the effort to preserve Hawaiian language documents through our Hawaiian Language Legacy Program (HLLP).

Library Services
The library offers library resources for adults and children. Our collections include basic references and reading material, a Native Hawaiian research collection, and a unique collection of quilt patterns. We have added two unique digital collections, Ulukau—the Hawaiian Electronic Library and the Hawai’i Digital Library. Our Resources page provides links to a scholarly Hawaiian journal, Ka Ho’oilina, Hawaiian dictionaries, and the Hawaiian Bible.

Our services include—

  • Books by Mail
  • Book Deposits
  • NHL’s Summer Reading Program
  • Storytelling
  • Special programs to celebrate reading
  • Workshops and Lectures

Catalogs
The NHL online catalog lists the books, videos, and other material in the main library collection. You may search the catalog by subject, author, title, or keywords. The online catalog does not list our digital collections, Ulukau—the Hawaiian Electronic Library and the Hawai’i Digital Library. These collections will be added to the catalog following selection of a new cataloging system by the library and ALU LIKE’s Information Services group.

Legacy Program
The Hawaiian Language Legacy Program (Papahana Ho’oilina ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i) was created to preserve, publish and disseminate 19th and 20th century Hawaiian language materials for the teaching and revitalization of the Hawaiian language and culture. Our Legacy Materials are in two digital collections, Ulukau—the Hawaiian Electronic Library, and the Hawai’i Digital Library (HDL).

Ulukau contains many materials that were written in Hawaiian. Translations are included when available. The Hawai’i Digital Library contains materials about Hawai’i written in English.

Literacy Program

NHL supports literacy and learning for Native Hawaiian adults, youth, and children. The ‘IKE Learning Lab provides literacy services and lifelong learning opportunities to Native Hawaiian adults. The Kahi ‘Ohana Programs and outreach centers serve Native Hawaiian children. The Ka Lama Ulu Program partners with community service providers to foster reading and other educational activities.

Borrowing Library Materials
Anyone who has a valid Picture I.D. and a Native Hawaiian Library Card can borrow materials from our collection.  The loan period for all circulating items is four weeks.  Books may be renewed for one additional loan period by calling (808) 535-1360 from Oahu and 1-800-682-0525 from Neighbor Islands.
