HAWAII STATE PUBLIC LIBRARY CATALOG

NHL LIBRARY CATALOG

The Native Hawaiian Library has a number of catalog options for our three categories of library collections:

1. Most materials in our library catalog, which is under construction, are classified according to the Dewey Decimal System, just like the public library system, and many of the items in this collection can also be found through the public library system Our collection includes books for people of all ages, primarily on Hawaiiana, with some of the books written in the Hawaiian language. This is also where you will find general interest (not just Hawaiiana) books, and multi-media titles including DVDs, videos, CDs, and cassette tapes.

2. The Data Resource Center collection, which is classified according to a unique documents classification system, does not circulate and is used primarily by researchers and others requiring data. Although the materials cannot be checked out, you can request copies of most materials at a cost of $.25 per page. This collection contains a lot of information on Hawaiian history, culture, environment, social issues, genealogy, census information, and much more. Since most titles will not be known, a keyword search for most of these materials is recommended.

3. The library has quite a number of quilt designs created by Hannah Ku‘umililani Cummings Baker, which you are invited to come in and trace, although the patterns themselves cannot be checked out. See below.

The Hannah Baker Quilt Legacy Workshops presented by the Native Hawaiian Library and the Bishop Museum make available to the Hawaiian community a selection of the Hannah Baker quilt patterns deposited at the Bishop Museum by the Baker family. These workshops provide quilters access to these exceptional patterns for personal enjoyment and use.
