AMBER ALOHILANI PAGAN
Amber Pagan called Alu Like, Inc. in March 2006 in search of assistance for Classroom Training with the Hawaii Academy of the Healing Arts to become a certified substance abuse counselor.
Amber started her Classroom Training with the Hawaii Academy of the Healing Arts in Waimea and completed the certificate program in March 2007.
Amber is currently employed with the Big Island Substance Abuse Counsel at Honokaa High School. She is serving as a School Based Substance Abuse Counselor for teens.
Alohi plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and expressed her gratitude to Alu Like, Inc. with lots of joy in her heart. There is always hope to make a difference in your life and with the assistance of ALU LIKE, Inc., anyone can accomplish their dream.

LOVENA LOVE
Lovena Love wanted to become a Certified Nurse’s Aide and transition from working with children to caring for the elderly. She had done her research and knew what was available in the community and where she wanted to go to accomplish her goals. She came into ALU LIKE, Inc. ready to face new challenges.
Lovena entered the CNA training program with the support of ALU LIKE, Inc. and was an excellent student. She had a positive attitude and looked forward to her training program. She concluded her certification and sought available work opportunities. Lovena quickly found a job with Hawaii Healthcare Professionals, Inc.
Working with the elderly has exceeded Lovena’s expectations. She looks forward to many years of working with the elders in our community.

JORDAN KAM-ROSARIO
Jordan “Ikaika” Kam-Rosario came to ALU LIKE, Inc. seeking financial assistance to obtain his Marine Captain’s License. He successfully completed the course, received his Maritime Licensing Center Certificate and Captain’s License. Once licensed, his plan was to seek employment as a deckhand or boat captain and progress to the position of a tugboat captain.
Eventually, he applied for a position with Sea Engineering, Inc. and was hired as a marine construction worker with their Diving & Construction department. The company offers Jordan with an excellent opportunity to train as a boat captain.
Jordan’s life goal is to buy a home and raise a family. He intends to further his training by continuing to pursue a Captain’s license. There is no doubt that his enthusiasm and positive attitude, along with the assistance of ALU LIKE, Inc., will help him to complete his dreams.

LIPOA KAHALEUAHI
Lipoa was fourteen when she came into the Hana Library in June of 2003. She was a quiet and observant young woman who was looking forward to participating in the WEX component of ALU LIKE, Inc.’s Supplemental Youth Program.
Lipoa was placed at the Hotel Hana Maui and did a great job there working with the hotel staff and visitors. In 2005 she transitioned to the Hana Cultural Center to further her training. In 2006, Lipoa’s love for surfing took her to California where she and her brother could compete in the surfing circuit.
In 2007, Lipoa graduated from High School and was a recipient of the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. She will be attending University of California, Santa Barbara. She hopes to study Photo Journalism and combine her major with her love of surfing, which will enable her to travel the globe to compete and work.
Lipoa has this advice for other Hawai‘i youth as they go through school and ponder their futures. She said that they should venture out into the world, beyond Hawai‘i and their comfort zone, in order to learn and experience more of what life, with all of its challenges, has to offer.

NILES FRANCES KAWEHI SOARES
Moloka’i born Kawehi Soares was involved with the Nature Conservancy since 2003 as a Moloka’i High School’s summer intern and has been with them through ALU LIKE, Inc.’s Ameri-Corp program. He is employed with the Nature Conservancy-Moloka’i as an Information Field Technician.
Kawehi was exposed to learning about native and non-native plants, coastal management, predator control and shearwater monitoring at Mo’omomi.
ALU LIKE, Inc.’s Employment & Training helped him with tuition assistance in pursuit of an Associate Degree.

WESLEY ABIHAI
ALU LIKE provides educational assistance to Native Hawaiians. Wesley Abihai sought help from ALU LIKE through the Native American Veteran’s Employment and Training (NAVET) Program.
Wesley was able to participate in the Ocean Hazmat course sponsored by the ALU LIKE, Inc.’s National Fisheries Observer Program and earned a certificate towards recognizing various types of hazardous material situations at sea.
ALU LIKE, Inc. Associate, Globeteck, offered Wesley courses in land-based hazardous material training. Wesley wanted to continue his education and ALU LIKE, Inc. was able to assist Wesley with the tuition for Hazmat training. After graduating with a certificate from Globeteck, Wesley was hired by American Industrial Insulation LLC.
While Wesley is grateful for his employment, he also wants to continue his role as a steward of Hawaii’s resources by completing the ALU LIKE, Inc.’s Longline Fishery Observer Preparatory Course and qualifying as a Longline Fishery Observer. By caring for both the land and the sea, Wesley Abihai will truly express traditional Hawaiian values. |
